Description: Black on white watermarked paper, very ornate vignette of republic symbols at lower center consisting of an eagle with spread wings clutching arrows with upright faces and Phrygian cap. Embossed French seal lower left. This note is an assingnat, a form of currency used by the first French Republic that were backed by the value of lands that were taken unjustly from the Catholic Church. The over-issuance of these notes cause massive inflation and food shortages in France and eventually became worthless. Uniface. 190mm x 112mm.
