This bank was founded in 1865 by King Johann and was one of five note-issuing banks operating in Saxony (Sachsen in German.) and began issuing notes in January of 1866. This note is from the fourth emission of notes by this bank, and is one of the last “traditional” issues prior to the hyper-inflation issues of the early 1920’s. Like most German banks, their note-issuing right was revoked in December of 1935. A classic example of German banknote production, being printed by Giesecke & Devrient, a firm still in business today.
