Description: This First of Exchange, or draft, is similar to a check and has many very interesting features. This item seems to have been made out for wages, to a Basilio Nunez, for the sum of $345.15 in United States Currency. This exchange was drafted on the bank branch in the Chilean city of Valparaiso, and the funds were paid by W.R. Grace & Co. a very well known materials company still in business today. So this Mr. Nunez was very likely a mine worker or manager. There are three endorsements on the reverse, one by W.R. Grace in Chile and then on to New York City to the company’s bank. The exchange itself is ornate, with coats-of-arms at top center, and the bank monogram along the left side. There is also an orange Chilean revenue stamp at the bottom left corner. There is also micro-printing where the amounts are written. The bill measures 235mm x 125mm. This bank did not issue circulating banknotes, so this is very likely the only form of fiscal paper available from this bank.
